A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, September 29, 2012 at the Central United Methodist Church, 112 North Range Street, Oblong, Illinois.
A casual gathering of friends and family will follow the service at the church.
A private family graveside service was held earlier at the Hardinville Cemetery.
The family request in lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may take the form of a contribution to the Central United Methodist Church or Oblong Schools Academic Foundation with envelopes at the church or may be mailed to Pulliam Funeral Home, P. O. Box 121, Oblong, Illinois 62449.
Gary W. Otey, 61, Oblong, Illinois passed away on Thursday, September 20, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Hospital, Vincennes, Indiana. He was born on July 21, 1951, to Harold & Neva (Lindsey) Otey, on his mother’s birthday.
Gary was a member of the Oblong High School Class of 1969 and the Central United Methodist Church, Oblong where he was a member of the church choir for many years and also served on many of the church committees. Gary served in the U. S. Air Force four years from 1970 – 1974. Two of those years he was stationed in Germany at Ramstein AFB. He attended Lincoln Trail College where he received a degree in Petroleum Technology. He worked in New Mexico and Casper, Wyoming for Mel-Chem Chemical Company for ten years. He later returned to Lincoln Trail College receiving a degree in Computer Technology. He managed the bookstore at Lincoln Trail for a time. Gary taught computers in the State of Illinois prison system for fifteen years. His last employment was manager of Crawford Recycling.
Gary is survived by his parents, Harold & Neva Otey; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Diana & Paul Smith, Brenda & David Richart and Beverly Otey; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
Gary is preceded in death by his grandparents, Samuel & Bertha Otey and Perl & Florence Lindsey and one brother-in-law, Dan Daley.
